Invest in You

pastorjoe6

The question I am going to propose for you this year is “What are you doing for yourself?”

This question to leaders and people with servant hearts can seem unacceptable and upside down.

Leading involves sacrifice. But to what extent?

When you are on an airplane, in the event of an emergency, they ask you to put the mask over yourself, before you put it on your children. Why? Because you can’t help others if you don’t help yourself.

One of the greatest investments one can make is in themselves. When you are healthy, you will be a better father, employee, leader, co-worker, church member, etc.

Do you view yourself as an asset? Viewing yourself as an asset is transformative. God has given you the skills and abilties to make a difference in this world. Yet so many of us do not take care of ourselves.

You invest in assets. Especially ones that bring good returns and/or have the capacity to bring a return. I believe you are worth it.

Here are some investments to consider in the new year: This list is not exhaustive but a good start.

  1. Health - Stay active. Excercize 4 to 5 times a week. Walk. Lift weights. 30 minutes a day. Change up your diet. Eat better. Less sugar, processed foods, etc. you get the picture. Prioritize your health.

  2. Therapy - talk to a professional about your feelings. Most of our worries and anxieties are in our thought life. Learning how to process and prioritize your thoughts will help you work more efficiently.

  3. Rest - rest is a rhythm built into the created order. God worked and rested. After cooking food, you let it rest. When you workout, in between sets, you rest. We are not computers or machines. We need to rest. Neglecting rest will lead to burnout and/or poor decision making which will in turn hurt your organization.

  4. Reading - reading slows your brain down. If you are not strong reader (I am not), read in spurts. Don’t take on too much. Reading also spurs creativity and growth. Mix in audible and podcast. But grab a book.

How are you going to invest in yourself? Take some time and write it down. I pray you feel and see the return in your family, church, and organization.

Happy New Year!

Joe
